Though Missy Raines built her reputation as one of the finest bassists in bluegrass history, her two solo albums are more expansive than that might suggest. The largely instrumental releases are oriented toward improvisational jams, with a strong emphasis on jazz and (to a lesser extent) blues and rock. Fans of Steve Winwood will find in Raines a kindred spirit, though she also demonstrates a flair for moody, smoky late-night strolls. Wilmington's Onward, Soldiers open the show and are led by Sean Gerard; his weathered baritone trembles beneath haunted, heel-dragging Americana and bristling country-rock. They'll release their debut, Ghosts in This Town, later this year. —Chris Parker
