Mipso Trio, Overmountain Men, Jim Avett

When: Sat., Jan. 14, 8:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $8-10

Opening act Jim Avett's sons, Scott and Seth, helped set the groundwork for the headlining band. Mipso Trio features three UNC students who echo the softer side of the Avett Brothers' earliest EP, Country Was. The music has roots in old-time and bluegrass, certainly, but sentimentalism and elements of rock guitar (on "Winding River") and Motown swing (on "He'll") temper some of the rural edge of these traditional styles. Avett bassist Bob Crawford's other band, Overmountain Men, delivers rollicking outlaw country-folk, while Jim Avett brings the mournful songs of his heartfelt 2010 LP, Tribes. —Corbie Hill
