Mipso Trio CD release, Libby Rodenbough Show

When: Sat., April 14, 8:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $10

Chapel Hill's Mipso Trio doesn't sound its age—which is to say, it doesn't sound like a band that has existed for less than two years. These UNC undergrads, who released an eponymous EP last March shortly after forming the trio, were eager to put something on tape even if the band went nowhere. Even at this early stage, the members already had come to a valuable realization many bands never reach: that a record is a snapshot of a band at a point in time, rather than an anchor that holds it there. As guitarist and primary lyricist Joseph Terrell sings, "I don't know why I'd try to stop the wind."

The band celebrates the release of its debut LP, Long, Long Gone, at this show. They mobilize UNC students in a way few local original bands do—they've sold out the Cradle previously—and that's a testament to the modern-folk string trio's magnetism. With a relaxed, open stage presence and lyrics that are conversationally casual though concise and approachable, these dudes make it look easy. The Libby Rodenbough Show opens the 8:30 p.m. show. The $10 admission includes a copy of Mipso's enjoyable new record. —Corbie Hill

Correction (April 11, 2012): Mipso are UNC undergrads (not grads).
