Menos El Oso, Minus the Bear’s third LP, turns 10 this year. Ostensibly, it’s the band’s best record, the one on which the quintet honed its knotty but pretty indie rock. The music also marked a shift in approach, as the group’s King Crimson worship started to peek through. Post-Menos El Oso, former Botch guitarist Dave Knudson’s licks ceded to shimmery art-rock veneers, and Jake Snider’s barbiturate croon and sugary hooks took on warped emo-prog tendencies. The band has offered mostly diminishing returns since, but at Minus the Bear’s best, keenly catchy art rock is still possible. —Patrick Wall
