Miniature Tigers, Aminal, Jordan & the Sphinx

When: Thu., Aug. 19, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $9-11

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Miniature Tigers' move from Phoenix to Brooklyn after their arresting, ramshackle, lo-fi pop debut, Tell It To the Volcano, involved a significant loss of charm. Sounding more sophisticated, polished and layered, their follow-up, Fortress, is still brightly lit with gleaming hooks and a trippy lyrical perspective, but its unaffected allure gives way to a self-conscious art-pop swoon reminiscent of Animal Collective and Of Montreal. The songs remain catchy but feel like some of the air's been sucked out. Locals Aminal are even more deserving of genuflection thanks to songs balancing infectious melodies, crafty arrangements and fiery indie rock spirit. Also, Jordan & the Sphinx.—Chris Parker
