Re: “Pushing Raleigh on affordable housing initiatives

Well...it's about time for this issue of affordable housing has been revisited. There are not viable excuses why this issue has not been dealt with before now, but hopefully, this time around, there will be a successful resolution to get the poor and homeless, housed successfully. In the wake of the huge debate about the Dorthea Dix property, why not make this property a one stop shop for the poor and homeless, as well? There is more then enough land to build enough affordable housing and necessary services on the same property and have your "destnination park" as well, but I am sure that would be seen as a conflict of interest. I have been a long time proponent of the affordable housing initiative and would gladly speak before the council about this issue..

Re: “Leaving prison—and staying out

I am an ex-offender of 20 years ago and when I apply for work, my crimes haunt me to this very day, as if I committed them 20 minutes ago, so it should not be made to sound as if going through a program will rid society of the hardships and difficulties ex-offenders face in the job and housing markets, because it is not that easy.

But if there is not a stronger collaborative effort between, our Justice Department, Employers and Landlords, recidivism in our prisons as well as in our shelters will continue to be on the rise.

I applaud our Govenor for all her efforts, but to proceed to face them with the knowledge that there are some of us (ex-offenders) who are being left behind and that should not be so.

Create helps that will help all who fit into this category, so there will be healing for all pertinent parties.

Re: “Interact debuts a new model for violence prevention in Raleigh

I think this article is phenomenal ! I love what Interact is doing for the sake of our battered women and they should be commended on all of their efforts. The first local "one-stop shop." Now, if human service providers for the homeless developed such a shop for homeless men, women and children, homelessness may not have spiraled out of control as it has. Politicians and the "powers that be" need to get off their soap boxes and realize this. Attack homelessness as Interact is attacking homeless for women, but primarily, the safety and the upbuilding of their clients. I tip my hat to you at Interact. Keep up the great work !

Re: “The restless Dan Schooley

What makes Dan the most needy??? Again, another attempt at online panhandling. This is unbelieveable. I mean when does it end? Panhandling on the streets, panhandling online...give it a rest Dan, Gary....Joe.... Stop being a part of your own problem and be a part of the solution. You made a comment that no one came and presented the ten year plan to you. Then you stated that no one came to give you a hand off the streets. If you are waiting for that day, you will be waiting a long time. Grow up and man up...

Re: “The well-traveled Gary Smith

I think feeble attempts at online panhandling, such as this, are abominable, at best and should not be tolerated. Mr. Smith should stop all of his incessant whining and get off his behind and go out in the community and seek the services that are not at the SWSC, as the rest of us have to do. It is not fair to cast a desparaging remark on the SWSC. I mean they may not be the best place to be on earth, but look at the alternatives....the streets....if the center is that bad, go to the streets. It is your choice to do so.

Re: “Pushing Raleigh on affordable housing initiatives

Affordable housing is not a priority for the City of Raleigh or Wake County, as is the continuing Urban Sprawl, in the name of "beautifying" the city. Affordable housing is something is one of those things that is just not going to go away, because there was an attempt to "sweep" it under the rug. It must be dealt with before our local issue of homelessness spirals out of control

Re: “In Raleigh, a homeless man is finding friends -- and finding himself

Bob: Thanks for posting such a moving blog post regarding Ricky and the speech he made Sunday at Pullen. He did do a wonderful job and made me so very proud of him, that I am proud to call him, both my friend and colleague. Keep up the good work Bob. I have always been a fan of your writing.
