Mike Compton, Joe Newberry

When: Thu., June 27, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $10-$18

Meet two masters of old-time music. Mandolinist Mike Compton's work on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Down From the Mountain soundtracks—including the former's signature cut, "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow"—earned him a pair of Grammys, and he also co-founded the Nashville Bluegrass Band in the mid-'80s. Banjoist/guitarist Joe Newberry, a Raleigh resident, won an IBMA last year for his songwriting; he also performs with local string band Big Medicine and in a quartet with three former Red Clay Ramblers. Compton and Newberry recently recorded together after years of playing as a duo; expect their mix of standards and originals to feature expertly picked instrumentals and perfectly lonesome harmonies. —Spencer Griffith
