Middle of Nowhere

When: Thu., Oct. 10, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: Free
Female filmmakers are always a rarity, but black female filmmakers are even more of a rarity. Seriously, can you name at least two black female filmmakers off the top of your head? And when that same filmmaker manages to make a second film, it's damn near a milestone. This makes Middle of Nowhere all the more noteworthy. Ava DuVernay's 2012 feature, about a med student (the mouthful that is Emayatzy Corinealdi) who drops out of school and goes on a journey of self-discovery while waiting for her man to get out of prison, is actually a follow-up to her 2010 debut I Will Follow. Her sophomore film has gotten DuVernay a lot of notice, especially after it won the Directing Award for Best Dramatic Film at last year's Sundance Film Festival. So, if you want to acquaint yourself with the work of one black female filmmaker (as well as see a movie that includes a soundtrack from such alt-soul artists as Goapele, Little Dragon and Meshell Ndegeocello), this movie is all ready and waiting for you to view, in one screening only on the UNC campus. —Craig D.
