Michael Burks

When: Thu., March 24, 10 p.m. 2011
Price: $15

Michael Burks, now 53, has been playing the blues since age 5, when his bass-playing father—a sideman for Sonny Boy Williamson—offered Michael a dollar for each tune he learned. After making his father's wallet significantly lighter, Burks went on to make a name for himself, matching his fretwork with powerhouse soul vocals. As a result, Burks often garners comparisons to legends like Albert King and Albert Collins. While he's surely not on their level, it's compliment enough to be mentioned in such lofty company. —Spencer Griffith
