Merrily We Roll Along

When: Wed., Oct. 23, 7 p.m. 2013
Huzzah, rare Stephen Sondheim! This rarely produced 1981 musical was one of the bigger flops of the Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd maestro's career, playing only 16 performances in its initial Broadway run, which still outpaced Anyone Can Whistle. The story updates an old Kaufman and Hart play that told its story in reverse order decades before Harold Pinter's Betrayal (though the production filmed for this version, ironically, did play at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London). The title song served as a transition to scenes moving backward in time. This proved a mite confusing in the initial run: The actors wound up having to wear sweatshirts with their characters' names to keep everything straight. This filmed presentation from London shouldn't have that problem; it's also a chance for Sondheim fans to experience one of his most offbeat and experimental works. —Zack Smith
