Meredith Monk & the House Foundation

When: Nov. 2-3, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $26-32

Meredith Monk turns 70 during Thanksgiving week, but that doesn't mean what it does for most people. An artist who transcends genre, classification and time, Monk has always seemed simultaneously futuristic and ancient. Consider the famous still image from her film Book of Days, in which a woman in medieval garb holds her hands to her face to pantomime taking a snapshot of the viewer. Far from a snarky joke, it communicates both the agency and magic involved in image-making. Monk concludes a two-week residency at Duke this weekend with two performances, with her vocal ensemble, of "Education of the Girlchild Revisited." The piece reprises one of her foundational solos (performed at ADF in 2008), in which a woman ages backward, evoking an infinite, communal spirit. She's also woven a new piece called "Shards" from other works from the early 1970s. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday; tickets are $26–$32, or $10 for Duke students. —Chris Vitiello
