At least they’re restless: After cycling through several iterations of post-punk revisionism, Tampa band Merchandise expanded into a five-piece in advance of this year’s After the End, their debut for 4AD, and drifted strangely into alt-rock doldrums. Like Toad the Wet Sprocket searching for The Cure, the songs linger in a half-tempo haze, would-be hooks clouded by the need to stay current with nebulous textures. After the End feels like an attempt to break through for new audiences, though it ends up largely breaking the ardent spirit that first made Merchandise intriguing. —Merchandise
