Melt Banana, Retox, Cinemechanica

When: Tue., Nov. 5, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $12
Reduced to the core duo of guitarist Ichiro Agata and vocalist Yasuko Onuki, this iteration of Melt-Banana is responsible for Fetch, the band's eighth album and first in six years. They remain as irrepressible and indefinable as ever. A smattering of ecstatic bursts, the record is a remarkably uplifting excursion. Sure, the economical ferocity is a grindcore characteristic, while Onuki's cheerful chirps over the mechanically precise, programmed drums suggest Battles at the height of their math-metal whimsy. There's a sense of urgency and willful irreverence that smacks of punk, too. But this album elides pissed-off wallowing for an exhilarating endorphin rush. —Bryan C. Reed
