Megafaun, Tender Fruit

When: Fri., Jan. 21, 10 p.m. 2011
Price: $10-$12
Change is Megafaun's only constant. Drummer Joe Westerlund left the Old North State late last year for California, making the band a transcontinental outfit. It's also apparently become a quartet, featuring former Bowerbird and Bon Iver member Mark Paulson, as of this week's doubleheader at Kings. But that steady and unceasing modulation is the essence of Megafaun: Though the band has continued to add elements to its polyglot sound, its foundation remains a combination of freeform experimentation and Appalachian traditional music, elegantly straddled and presented with warm fraternal harmony. No matter how far afield Megafaun draws its influence, or how far the band's appeal extends, the audience remains rapt, as though listening to a thoughtful storyteller in a quiet living room. From the borrowed-space performances of a few short years ago to sold-out Cat's Cradle gigs and this weekend's two-night stand at Kings, Megafaun seems to become even more of a hometown treasure the more it roams. Friday's opener, Christy Smith, brings her emotionally wrought folk to the stage as the Tender Fruit; Saturday marks the debut of new Durham quartet Cloudlines. The music begins at 10 p.m. each night —Bryan Reed
