Medium Well in Hell Fest: Barbelith, Coffins Across Hiroshima, Faith in Ashes, Windwaker, Dreaded, Château

When: Sun., Aug. 23, 5 p.m. 2015
Price: $8-$10
The nine-band bill for the inaugural “Medium Well in Hell Fest” is so daunting that organizers have little choice but to offer you sustenance. A barbecue starts at 4 p.m., an hour before the first act takes the stage. For the rest of the night, nine shades of black metal pass on and off the stage, each handling admixtures of tremolo riffs and blast beats with their own finesse. Raleigh’s Heron, for instance, couches its pummel with halcyon but haunted atmospherics, while Wilmington’s Windwaker goes for fully grim genre atavism. Best of all, though, might be Baltimore’s Barbelith, who twist bits of trash, math rock and even a little prog into their numbers. They frequently stretch tracks toward the 15-minute mark, too, allowing them to indulge Krallice-like complexity on songs with perceptible emotional undercurrents. Maybe that’ll be hard to follow at the end of a show longer than most workdays, but did you expect hell to be easy? —Grayson Haver Currin
