Meat Puppets, Cass McCombs

When: Tue., Nov. 4, 8:30 p.m. 2014
Price: $17-$20
Cass McCombs’ charm recalls Lou Reed’s laid-back lyricism, while the textures of his low-key folk simmer behind smart melodies. Last year’s somewhat unfocused double album, Big Wheel and Other Songs, was his seventh release since his 2003 debut, A. If culled, it could’ve have topped year’s-best lists. Since Cris Kirkwood’s 2007 return, The Meat Puppets’ second life began slowly but has rapidly gained momentum, culminating in last year’s back-to-basics triumph Rat Farm. It suggests the loose folk-punk of their first three albums, when they sounded like an anxious group of Deadheads, panhandling aggressively. —Chris Parker
