Measure for Measure

When: Feb. 17-18, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $10

The New York-based Fiasco Theater Company continues its residency with Duke Performances with a special workshop reading of Shakespeare's classic Measure for Measure. Fiasco is known for its bare-bones interpretations of Shakespeare plays rarely mentioned in the same breath as Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet, presenting them in a light that is both entertaining and comprehensible.

With Measure for Measure, they'll be tackling a story that involves a man in a sexually repressive culture who is sentenced to death for having sex with his not-quite-yet wife. When the young man's sister appeals to the cruel magistrate for mercy, sexual hypocrisy is revealed. The premise is compelling, but the Bard's execution of the narrative has confounded many production companies over the centuries. With this reading, we'll see what Fiasco has in mind for bringing the story to life. Tickets to the 8 p.m. performance are $10, or $5 for Duke students. —Zack Smith
