Matthew Kennedy

When: Sat., April 12, 7 p.m. 2014
It's fascinating when pop culture eras collide and tradition gives way to something new. One such time was the late '60s, when expensive movie-musical flops hastened the end of the old studio system. Film historian Matthew Kennedy's new book, Roadshow! The Fall of Film Musicals in the 1960s, examines this strange era of Hollywood excess, showing how the likes of Star! and Camelot unwittingly paved the way for untraditional '70s fare such as Five Easy Pieces and The Godfather. Kennedy discusses his research with supplementary film clips, music and period cocktails. —Zack Smith
