Re: “Since 2011, Raleigh Residents Have Been Lobbying the City to Allow Backyard Cottages. What’s the Holdup?

Proponents paint a picture of homeowners building a cottage in the back yard for grandma, or for extra income. But the state Court of Appeals ruled in 2011 that any condition of owner-occupancy is unconstitutional. Without that condition, allowing backyard dwelling units would be an invitation for absentee landlords to buy older houses and put extra units in the backyards, to maximize income. Since newer neighborhoods have covenants that prohibit these things, older neighborhoods would become especially attractive to absentee landlords. The hidden nature of these units would make them hard for neighbors and police to keep an eye on.

Re: “If Wake County Doesn’t Have Extra Money for Schools, Should It Spend Millions to Turn a Failed Golf Course into a Park?

The school system is trying to absorb a $28 million budget shortfall. If the County government has an extra $20 million, Commissioners should spend it on the schools, not on an extra park that is above and beyond what the master plan calls for. Maintaining the quality of our public schools is essential to the future of Wake County.

Re: “Neighbors Think a Developer’s Plans for the Velvet Cloak Inn Are Too Ugly

Bravo to Neil Riemann and the Cameron Park neighbors! Hillsborough Street is indeed one of Raleigh’s most important streets, traveled by many visitors to our city. There should be quality standards for what is built there. The big white-and-yellow plastic box at 1301 Hillsborough Street (where the Briggs mansion was demolished) is a disgrace!
