Re: “Environment N.C. report bullish on N.C. solar power

It is true that solar power is slightly more expensive than traditional electricity generation today in most of the country. One of the most economic generation technologies is clean-burning natural gas. Today we are seeing historically low prices of natural gas, thanks to fracking, and this contributes in a major way to the low cost of electricity thereby generated. Would anyone expect the cost of natural gas to remain low for 10 years? 20?

Solar farms built today will easily operate for the next 25 years and quite possibly much longer. The cost of solar fuel (sunlight) will never increase. Trainloads of sunlight will never derail, pipelines of sunlight will never explode. Ocean-going tankers of sunlight will never run aground, and radiation leaks of sunlight would be better called "a nice sunny day."

Solar will be a viable energy source for our future, and North Carolina's leadership position is enviable.
