Masculin Féminin

When: Fri., Feb. 24, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

The museum's continuing homage to the ethos of Mad Men—or should we say les hommes fous?—taps the French New Wave with Jean-Luc Godard's 1966 film Masculin Féminin. Banned in France upon its release, the story was racy for its time, and it probably still is. Paul (Jean-Pierre Léaud), an idealistic young intellectual, pursues pop starlet Madeleine (real yé-yé girl Chantal Goya), ending up in a ménage à quatre with her roommates. Before you get too excited, know that Godard's real titillation comes in the quasi-documentary interviews with the characters, as well as his nonlinear narrative style. The intercourse is discourse over the issues of the times. Ultimately the film shows how sexual politics and cultural politics came together, so to speak, in mid-1960s Paris. The Mad Men connection? One also walks out of a Godard film from this era feeling much cooler than one really is. Independent Weekly culture editor David Fellerath introduces the classic. —Chris Vitiello
