Re: “N&O lays off publishers at community papers

My former publisher's last name is actually Larson, not Larsen. We take such things seriously at community papers. I'm just sayin'. :) To answer JohnD's question I'd say that publishers at community papers do whatever needs to be done. They certainly mind the bottom line and they also toe the line when it comes to corporate financial reporting. They maintain the documents that are required in order to comply with sound business practices. Publishers also paint the big picture for the rest of the staff. They set goals and they set the tone. They communicate vision to the staff. They drop the other shoe. They clean off the fan once the shit has hit. They serve on community action committees and they help plan parades and art festivals. Around here, community newspaper publishers are also known to mop floors, change lightbulbs and haul our morgue papers down to the cellar. Can we do it with less publisher? Of course we can. Can we do it as well? Only time will tell. We will certainly try. Our former publisher would expect no less.
