Some wear alt-country like an outfit someone else gave them. Others inhabit it, fusing story and spirit and surface; and if ever there was a form for wandering wastrels like Gauthier, it's alt-country. At 15, she ran from home headlong into a youth of drugs and jail before righting herself as a restaurateur decades later. Her songs are populated by lost, lonely and longing outsiders, looking for something in which to believe. Her latest, The Foundling, addresses her adopted youth and is perhaps her most riveting release yet. —Chris Parker
