Mary Chapin Carpenter

When: Sun., July 18, 7 p.m. 2010
Price: $23+

Princeton, N.J., isn't Bakersfield. Brown University isn't the school of hard knocks. The coffeehouses of D.C. aren't honky-tonks. So, yeah, Mary Chapin Carpenter's route to country music wasn't your traditional one, and her sound has never really fit inside the trad confines: "Down at the Twist and Shout" and "Passionate Kisses," a Cajun-spiced tune and a number from the Lucinda Williams songbook respectively, are two of her biggest hits. Still, the country music crowd embraced her and she earned the 1989 Top New Female Vocalist of the Year nod from the Academy of Country Music, followed three years later by Top Female Vocalist of the Year—a couple of trophies that make good bookends for five Grammys. Carpenter's recent The Age of Miracles proves that, 20 years in, the craft and respect remain. The music starts at 7 p.m.; the tickets start at $22.50. Garrison Starr opens. Rick Cornell
