Mark Tatulli

When: Thu., Oct. 24, 5 p.m. 2013
Readers of newspaper comics might already know the dark humor of Mark Tatulli's strip Lio, the wordless tale of a spiky-haired little troublemaker with a propensity for hanging around with monsters, demons and other unsettling things. (It's a bit of a departure from Tatulli's other comic strip, the more down-to-earth Heart of the City.) But what would Lio be like with dialogue?Find out with his illustrated children's book Desmond Pucket Makes Monster Magic, about a youngster enthralled by special effects whose propensity for monster-themed pranks threatens to get him kicked out of school before a big class trip to an amusement park—and whose efforts to stay straight might be undone by someone framing him.Written for ages 7-12, the book includes a section showing kids how to make monster pranks that are a little less destructive than Desmond's. —Zack Smith
