Mark Katz

When: Fri., April 27, 7 p.m. 2012

We know it's hard for a lot of people—musicians, music purists, anyone over the age of 40—to believe, but there is a science to being a DJ. Mark Katz, a UNC music professor, author and part-time DJ, discusses his book Groove Music: The Art and Culture of the Hip-Hop DJ, scheduled for release next month, as part of the N.C. Science Festival. While we're sure he'll give an insightful talk on how far the DJ movement has come, we also hope he'll bust out a couple of turntables and wow folks with his scratching and cutting. We know we live in a straight-from-the-laptop, Serato-software kind of world, but can't we go old-school with the music every now and again? The event starts at 7 p.m. —Craig D. Lindsey
