Mark Helprin

When: Thu., Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m. 2012

Mark Helprin's deeply eclectic career ranges from the cult magical realism novel Winter's Tale to a trilogy of dark children's fantasy stories illustrated by Jumanji's Chris Van Allusburg to his work as a conservative commentator and the author of a controversial treatise arguing for the perpetual extension of copyrights for their holders. His latest work, In Sunlight and In Shadow, a love story set against the backdrop of post-World War II New York, has been similarly controversial, inspiring in the past week both a blisteringly negative review in The New York Times and a repudiation of that review on Huffington Post that compared him to the likes of John Keats. Helprin appears at 7:30 p.m. —Zack Smith
