Fate might be the most vexing human idea. While one may take comfort in the certainty of predetermination, another may cede hope to its inevitability. The Portuguese song form of fado, which is named from the same root word as fate, spans these extremes to savor a deep melancholia. Renowned vocalist Mariza is recognized both as a contemporary master of centuries-old fado and as a high-profile international singer. She delivered a duet with Sting at the 2002 Athens Olympics and sang the Portuguese national anthem at the 2002 FIFA World Cup before the team faced South Korea. Expect a dramatic night of songs that dredge the most delicious ache from the bottom of your soul. —Chris Vitiello
