Marisha Pessl follows up her acclaimed debut Special Topics in Calamity Physics with a creepy tale that's already dividing critics—Janet Maslin just panned it in The New York Times, while Entertainment Weekly graded it a bit higher but added that readers "should keep some Post-its nearby" while reading it. The tale of an enigmatic director (think Stanley Kubrick with a touch of David Lynch) whose daughter mysteriously dies spans more than 500 pages and employs multiple reviews, essays and even encyclopedia articles—which might be more than some readers can take. But it's also earning high marks from critics for its creepy style and narrative ambition. Advice: Get the book now, speed-read, and if you have any questions, you can ask Pessl in person. —Zack Smith
