Maple Stave, Horizontal Hold, Stranger in the Valley of Kings

When: Sat., March 14, 9:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $6
The coiled, vitriolic math-rock of Durham trio Maple Stave always leaned forward with urgency, as if forever poised for the next attack. Thinking about that sound, it’s surprising to realize that five years have passed since the release of their first—and, so far, last—album. But thanks to some geographical reunions, Maple Stave is increasing its activity, not only with their first area show in six months but also a recording session slated for the summer. They once warned by song that they would fire when they were goddamned good and ready. Ready yet? (Disclosure: Maple Stave member Chris Williams is an INDY employee.) Horizontal Hold, a slanted and enchanting indie-pop quartet of longtime local musicians, open. —Grayson Haver Currin
