Maple Stave, Black Squares/White Islands, Cantwell Gomez & Jordan

When: Fri., May 29, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $7
After an extended hibernation, flinty and pugnacious trio Maple Stave have returned to relative hyperactivity, not only playing shows again but recording a new album to be released this fall. Their mix of tense math-rock and sharp noise-rock can still strike like a snake. (Disclosure: Maple Stave’s Chris Williams is an INDY employee.) Cantwell, Gomez & Jordan continue to play harder than most, their tumultuous mix of guitar, drums, bass and occasional saxophone tying into knots that they then rip apart. Instrumental Greensboro group Black Squares/White Islands take on elements of both bands and add a little post-rock drift, a balm for all this bill’s wonderful restlessness. —Grayson Haver Currin
