The structure is simple—deceptively so, as four characters speak to us in monologues that interlink but never overlap. Still, as emerging British playwright Alice Birch's 2011 drama, Many Moons, unfolds, the jigsaw of a London neighborhood begins to take shape. As it does, we start to see, with differing levels of amusement and poignancy—and in some cases, dread—what's going to happen if these misfit pieces ever actually connect.

The Guardian said of its London premiere, "Birch paints a picture of an atomized society in which people are not nearly as separate as they like to think, and are far more responsible for each other than they are willing to accept." The reviewer's conclusion: "This is a meticulously written play... that slowly turns you inside out."

Gregor McElvogue directs the script's U.S. premiere in this Common Wealth Endeavors production. The cast includes J Evarts, Mary Guthrie, Scott Heath and David Sweeney. —Byron Woods
