Manic Caravan Poetry Reading Series: Sommer Browning and Laura Jaramillo

When: Sat., Oct. 18, 8 p.m. 2014

THOMAS ROOM IN LILLY LIBRARY AT DUKE UNIVERSITYIn 2013, the poetry reading series sponsored by the Duke English Department changed management and names, from Minor American to Manic Caravan. Since then, it has continued to bring notable poets from the academic and small-press worlds to campus, if not quite as prolifically as before. This installment features Colorado's Sommer Browning, who recently released her second collection on Raleigh imprint So & So Books, Backup Singers. Browning writes direct, humorous poems that coat uneasy themes with a garrulous personality; she should give an entertaining reading. She appears with Duke Ph.D. candidate Laura Jaramillo, whose new book 29 Waters, out last month on Make Now Press, has a complementary sort of deadpan despair and dark-comic nihilism. 8 p.m., free, 1348 Campus Dr., 919-660-5995, —Brian Howe
