Mangum & Company Shout Band

When: Sat., May 8, 3 p.m. 2010
Price: free

If a New Orleans brass band wandered from Bourbon Street onto the road to Damascus, it would become a shout band. The traditional African-American ensembles are trombone gospel choirs supported by rattling percussion and beefy sousaphone. Helmed by Cedric Mangum, the 12-plus-member Mangum & Company Shout Band usually plays at the Charlotte Mother House of Prayer. They're one of the few acts featured on the Smithsonian's first collection of shout band music. Exuberant songs praise the Lord with call-and-response turning into hypnotic repetition, individual lines and vibrato blasting and blending, baptizing listeners with a tidal wave of sound. —Andrew Ritchey
