Mando Saenz, Tim Stambaugh

When: Fri., Aug. 16, 10 p.m. 2013
Price: $5

Born in Mexico and raised mostly in Texas, singer-songwriter Mando Saenz eventually settled in Nashville and signed with noted producer Frank Liddell's Carnival Music. Another noted Nashville producer, Mark Nevers, produced Saenz's new Studebaker, his third album. As a writer, Saenz wisely places the lyrics' literal value secondary to the way the words fit a song's rhythm and melody. As a singer, he's even sharper, imbuing instant pop hooks ("Breakaway Speed") and lilting country heartbreakers ("They Don't Make 'Em Like You Anymore") with a resonant twang that makes his stories all the more indelible. Carrboro multi-instrumentalist mainstay Tim Stambaugh opens. —Peter Blackstock
