MAHMOUD AHMED

REYNOLDS INDUSTRIES THEATER, DURHAM

THURSDAY, SEPT. 10

The American music known as jazz came primarily from African slaves, whose musical traditions mixed with extant Latin American and southern United States forms. By the time bebop hit, the idea had spread internationally. Fast-forward into the 1970s, and musicians back in Africa were rolling American jazz back into their original work. The result was often an intense, pulsating music, layering the rhythms of all those ideas into one vibrant mix. Count Ethiopian vocalist Mahmoud Ahmed as one of greatest global jazz integrators. His 1975 album, Erè Mèla Mèla, announced the ornate, exhilarating "Ethio-jazz" to the rest of the world. Ahmed lays you out with a virtuoso voice, emerging from the mix in moments of soaring clarity. He will give you gooseflesh in the opening show of the Duke Performances season. 8 p.m., $10$34, 125 Science Drive, Durham, 919-684-4444, www.dukeperformances.duke.edu. —Chris Vitiello
