Magnetic Fields, Devotchka

When: Thu., April 12, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $25-28

For the last two decades, the life of Stephin Merritt—the leader of the bicoastal and coed The Magnetic Fields—has involved a series of artistic entrances and exits, broken patterns and returns to previously discarded forms. As his renegades of wry, The Magnetic Fields, have risen to something of iconic status within the ever-sprawling realm of indie rock, he's started and stopped several other bands, jumped from Merge to a major label and back to Merge, focused on dramatic scores and soundtracks, and generally shifted the stylistic parameters of the songs he writes. The Fields' latest, for instance, returns to the synthesizer sounds The Magnetic Fields employed to win a crowd in the '90s but which they dropped last decade in favor of folky ventures (2004's i) and electric overdrive (2008's Distortion). As such, the characteristically comic and crushing Love at the Bottom of the Sea feels even more playful than recent Merritt tunes, matching songs about lovers who only want to dance and lovers who don't want you to take off their pants with devilishly surprising textures and intricacies. This rare two-night stand April 11–12 includes opening act DeVotchka. Both shows start at 9 p.m. and cost $25 in advance, $28 day of show. —Grayson Currin
