Fernando Pessoa called Portuguese fado music the interval between happiness and sadness, “the fatigue of the strong soul.” Sweet and dark, crackling with pain, the voice of fado singer Lula Pena meanders through each syllable, exploring every nook and cranny. Pena’s stage presence is more evocative of a shy troubadour than a shawl-wearing fado diva, and she has earned a reputation as a recluse. In the 12 years between her first two albums, Pena has become somewhat of an elusive and sensitive legend. She steps beneath the stage lights at Duke. —Amanda Black
