Luego, Don Dixon, BJ Barham

When: Sat., Dec. 18, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $6

It's a fine evening for rock songwriters. Luego blends soulful grit and classic pop smarts on the '60s-inflected numbers that populate the band's two albums. It's peculiarly catchy stuff with a good deal of greased shimmy. Don Dixon never got famous fronting Arrogance, but he became a go-to producer after working on R.E.M.'s debut LP. His reedy voice is reminiscent of John Hiatt, while the sophisticated songcraft of 2006's The Entire Combustible World In One Small Room recalls the rich theatrical texture of Elvis Costello on Blood & Chocolate. American Aquarium frontman BJ Barham's outlook has matured as his band's crackling country rock has grown tighter. —Chris Parker
