There's a clear line between the entertaining and tedious parts of this sci-fi movie. It's when writer-director Luc Besson strays beyond his La Femme Nikita wheelhouse to grasp at some pretentious variation on the grand themes of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) lives in Taiwan, where she is cajoled into being a drug mule for Korean gangsters. When the bag sewn inside her abdomen ruptures, the synthetic substance leaches into her bloodstream, allowing her to access more than the 10 percent of the brain humans supposedly use. Her near-omnipotent powers deflate narrative tension. At times stylish and engaging, this is mostly dry as an academic lecture.
