Lower Dens, NAPS

When: Thu., Sept. 16, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $8

Residing somewhere between doom metal atmospherics and indie rock jangle, Baltimore's Lower Dens—"freak folk" artist Jana Hunter's new band—take the damaged approach Hunter once took to singer-songwriter fare and apply it to always awesome, but entry-level, underground rock. The group's excellent debut, Twin-Hand Movement, is the sound of a typical four-piece hammering out Joy Division-like jams dropped into a dungeon. All the instruments rattle off one another into a hulking, hazy mass of noise and, at just the right moments, strangely beautiful melody. Live, their gossamer drones and eerie charms are only enhanced. Raleigh's own slightly askew popsters NAPS open at 9:30 p.m.—Brandon Soderberg
