Love Language, Veelee, Laughing Man

When: Thu., Oct. 21, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $10

Though The Love Language blossomed from the junky, lo-fi beginnings of its self-titled debut into an ambitious wall of sound on this year's Libraries, the live lineup eschews the previous incarnation's big-band bluster for a leaner approach. With backward-looking, carefree-sounding songs of woe decorated with twinkling keys and strutting guitars, frontman Stu McLamb effortlessly ingrains classic choruses. Also on the bill: Chapel Hill couple Veelee drenches their melancholic melodies in reverb, treating their seemingly simple indie pop trinkets with spacious arrangements that twist and turn dramatically. D.C. trio Laughing Man conjures the Velvet Underground raised on a diet of Delta blues and Motown. —Spencer Griffith
