Lotus, Givers

When: Sat., May 1, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $14 in advance, $17

Though they've long been stamped with the jam band tag, Lotus eschews the granola vibe for a more thoughtful approach. The quintet—famed for one of the flashier light shows on the jam circuit—stretches trance-like grooves across long-lived instrumentals, covering a bedrock of funk with electronica impulses as hip-hop samples and jazz-inflected licks add a dash of intrigue. Givers channel Rusted Root's infectious world-beat energy, rubbery bass lines and coed chants through an indie pop filter. They bridge the gap between their current tour mates and former road pals like the Dirty Projectors. —Spencer Griffith
