Los Lobos

When: Fri., May 17, 8:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $12-35
A friend who lived in Raleigh through the '90s used to lament that Los Lobos' tours hardly ever visited the Triangle. Meanwhile, I reported from the Northwest (relatively near the band's native Los Angeles) that they seemed to come through my town every six months. Thankfully, the N.C. Museum of Art booked them for their summer concert series in 2002, and it was such a good match that the band now makes sure to play the idyllic outdoor venue a bit more often than, to paraphrase Kiko, once in a lavender moon.

They're not touring behind a new album, but their last, 2010's Tin Can Trust, presented another vivid amalgam of panoramic Americana spiked by Latino soul, with a slight detour into Grateful Dead territory. Los Lobos' catalog, now nearly four decades and 20 albums deep, holds up well against the oeuvres of any and all bands from the same era. They kick off what's arguably the strongest NCMA summer lineup in years, with the likes of Glen Hansard (June 15), Indigo Girls (June 29), Bruce Hornsby (Aug. 3) and Tift Merritt (Aug. 17) looming in the months ahead. —Peter Blackstock
