Re: “Durham needs 1,600 new trees a year

It seems like part of the solution is to plant many different kinds of trees. We have this problem because we planted a bunch of willow oaks all at the same time, and sure enough, they're all dying at the same time 80 years later. By replacing them all with willow oaks again, we're setting ourselves up for a bunch of pain in 2095. Why not plant trees with variable life spans so that the pain is spread out?

Re: “Apartments slated for meadow next to Greystone Inn in Morehead Hill

I think that apartments are actually quite appropriate here - it's a huge empty space right next to downtown. As stated by our great friend @MajorTheBull: it's a "big new surface lot with a few apts." We can do better than this: http://i.imgur.com/qh3P898.png

Re: “Durham PD Chief Lopez to address Thursday night violence

It seems like police never learn. When you disperse a small and peaceful protest with violence, people get upset. Then it comes back bigger and angrier. This pattern seems to repeat itself over and over. Hell, look at Tahrir Square in Turkey. It started as a little protest about land use and nearly overthrew the government because of police overreaction. I wasn't at the Thursday protest, but if there happens to be another one, I'll be there with them.

Re: “North Carolina ranks 10th in U.S. in number of farmers markets

It seems like the number that actually matters is the density and accessibility of farmers markets, not just the raw number. I dug up the raw data and put together a spreadsheet that ranks the states by markets per capita and per square mile. Our state is middle of the road by these metrics: 34th per person, 20th per square mile.

But hey, we still rank near the top for best farmers markets!

Here's the spreadsheet if anyone's interested: http://duke.edu/~dwr8/farmers-market-densi…

Re: “Nanataco; Fullsteam Brewery; Triangle Raw Foodists; Carrboro Farmers' Market

I just took a gander over at the raw foods web site and - yikes - some of the stuff on there is frighteningly misleading. To focus on one particular point, under the 'benefits of raw food' section it states: "When we are born, we are given a limited reserve of Enzymes that are necessary to keep our body system in working order throughout the entire duration of our lifetime."

I'd love to see a citation for that. This claim flies in the face of everything we know about biology. We're making new enzymes all the time through a very well-understood process of protein synthesis. Enzymes that we eat aren't even used - they're digested by the acidic conditions in our stomach and the enzymes that we make.

There may be reasons to eating raw food, but damn, that's really wrong.
