Long Story Shorts

When: Oct. 6-9 2011
Price: Free

Screenwriters are an odd and decreasingly anonymous lot—witness Aaron Sorkin's recent broken nose after accidentally head-butting a mirror while working through some particularly vehement dialogue. We have a screenwriter nursery of sorts in our own backyard at the Writing for the Stage and Screen program in UNC-Chapel Hill's communication studies department. Six graduating students present their 10-minute plays in the first annual Long Story Shorts festival, collaborating with faculty directors Dana Coen, Paul Ferguson and Joseph Megel. Fans of the ArtsCenter's decade-old "10 x 10 in the Triangle" festival appreciate the writerly craft that goes into the special comedy or drama, which immediately seizes and transports you, as well as the roller coaster rush of the immediate switcheroo to the next play. The program features Ross Maloney's "Conflicts of Interest," Cole Hammack's "The Way Out," Matthew Krantz' "Cheesy, Like Me," Jennifer Morgan's "Shot Through the Heart," Laura Stoltz's "Inside Out" and Ariel Butters' "Crisco." Performances run Thursday–Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.; admission is free. —Chris Vitiello
