Re: “A first-person account of the clash between Durham police and protesters

This is a much more accurate account of the events I experienced on Thursday than anything else I have read in mainstream media, and I appreciate Indyweek publishing it. I agree with the previous commenter in being disappointed in Indyweek's apparent editorial decision to confirm unquestioningly that "demonstrators—some of them throwing rocks and bottles—clashed with Durham police. Officers dressed in riot gear threw tear gas into the demonstration." I was in the plaza that night, and I have no memory of any protester throwing anything until after the tear gas was deployed and we were pushed by police into the street, nor does anyone else that I have spoken to who was also present.

Re: “Law enforcement and drug users embrace needle bill

Thanks for this great article, Indy Week! It's remarkable that in this legislative climate a bill like this could pass the legislature with such overwhelming bi-partisan support. It might be only a small step, but it's definitely a step forward. It takes about 30 seconds for a law enforcement officer and a community member to have a conversation about syringe or sharps possession. By taking the pressure off of that interaction, this law helps both people in that situation avoid a number of unnecessary and negative outcomes.
