Local Band, Local Beer: The Charming Youngsters, Weird Pennies, Coytah

When: Thu., Sept. 17, 9:30 p.m. 2015
Price: free
The Charming Youngsters have never sounded as confident as they do on their forthcoming LP, Middleweights. Early on, this Triangle-via-Greenville act was ebulliently nerdy, with jangly twang-rock numbers exuding dweeb pride like a cardigan-sporting Wilco. In eight years, though, the Charming Youngsters have adopted a tasteful level of Yo La Tengo-esque fuzz and evidently learned to trust in melody. The harmonies of vocalists Nolan Smock and Kathryn Jackson reveal a band that has gleefully embraced pop sensibilities. Are they still geeks, though? Probably. —Corbie Hill
