Lloyd Cole

When: Wed., Jan. 30, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $20

The Scottish singer-songwriter Lloyd Cole debuted with Rattlesnakes in 1984. Name-checking Norman Mailer and Leonard Cohen, Cole and his flinty romanticism split the difference between the two. The record earned Cole and his band the Commotions critical accolades. But after two lush major-label LPs failed to expand his audience, Cole moved to the States. He released his first record without the Commotions in 1990 with the help of Matthew Sweet, ace guitarist Robert Quine and others. Since then, Cole has added new colors to his bittersweet palette and collaborated with admiring fellow musicians while maintaining his self-deprecating charm. His most recent release, 2010's rustic countrypolitan Broken Record, begins, "Not that I had that much dignity left anyway." —David Klein
