Liz Magic Laser and Wendy Osserman: From North Carolina to Korea

When: Sat., Sept. 13, 8 p.m. and Sun., Sept. 14, 2 p.m. 2014
Price: $10-$25
Browsing online videos of Brooklyn multimedia artist Liz Magic Laser's work quickly reveals her obsession with the news media, but not so much its content as its angles of influence—its aggression and bluster, at once emotional and cynical; its ceaseless flow of illusions. In Laser's first collaboration with her mother, choreographer Wendy Osserman, local dancers joined by New York's Cori Kresge express this fixation using live video feeds, Internet videos and green-screen effects. You can also attend a free live-streamed event at 8 p.m. on Sept. 12 (RSVP to kferriol@email.unc.edu) where one audience at Memorial Hall will converse with another at the Nam June Paik Art Center in South Korea; fragments of the stream will then be incorporated into the performances on the following two nights. Osserman's spiky, anxious modern dance should interact tautly with Laser's manipulated news cycle. The piece, commissioned by UNC's art department and Carolina Performing Arts, was partially developed at UNC.
